The Hollow Body Series

THE UNDERDOG GUITAR

The Underdog model is a tribute to the timeless semi-hollow guitars that graced the pages of Sears, Roebuck, and Co.’s catalog from the late 19th century to the mid-1970s. These guitars, manufactured by renowned companies like Harmony, Kay, and Danelectro, were sold under various brand names such as Silvertone and Airline. Drawing inspiration from these catalog classics, I’ve infused many of my favorite features into my guitars, including iconic design elements and revered lipstick pickups. I’m particularly drawn to these instruments because they were crafted with a specific budget in mind, prompting ingenious solutions to achieve great sound within constraints. To this day, the wiring of lipstick pickups in series remains my favorite pickup/tone combination. As a devotee of early Delta Blues, I’ve observed how many of my musical heroes wielded Sears Catalog Guitars as their affordable weapon of choice. Thus, my mission became clear: to blend the design essence of catalog guitars with superior materials and meticulous craftsmanship, resulting in the creation of the Underdog model.

Neck

The guitar’s neck is made from old salvaged Mediterranean Cypress with wild rosewood, with a scarf joint construction for extra stability and rigidity and is glued with traditional hide glue.

The body

For the body, I utilize ancient salvaged pieces of lumber such as Mediterranean Cypress or Salvaged Jerusalem Pine from my personal collection. These woods offer a warm and open tone, complemented by the semi-hollow construction and my special lipstick humbuckers-the Dual Electrotones.

Pickups

Handmade and hand-wound, my special lipstick pickups feature original Alnico six magnets with AWG 42 enamel-plated wire. The Underdog model is available in four or six positions, offering a range of humbucker and single-coil tones.

Hardware

My own handmade bell brass hardware for warmer tone with a compensated 50s style floating bridge.
